The Environmental Services Association (ESA) has backed a report from think-tank Policy Connect calling for an expansion of energy from waste (EfW) in the UK, and has called on the press and commentators to stop ‘demonising’ the EfW sector.

The Policy Connect report argues that EfW is the best available treatment for residual waste and calls for a "Scandinavian approach" in the UK, linking energy and waste policy. It says that wider adoption of EfW is consistent with the UK’s move to a circular economy. and could end the practice of UK waste being shipped abroad to produce energy for other countries.
