A campaign has been launched with SEPA which has highlighted both the impact and the cost of illegal dumping.
In partnership with Crimestoppers, the campaign has asked those who work in the Waste Sector and also those who may own farming land and storage sites to speak up and have those who are guilty prosecuted. The campaign was launched last month and SEPA highlighted that each incident costs on average £1million which includes the cost of building repairs, damage and so on.
SEPA also explained that quite often Waste criminals pose as legal waste processors before dumping the waste illegally in places such as farms, warehouses and other remote locations.
The CEO of SEPA said: “The reality is that illegal stockpiling is on the rise and often on an industrial scale. It’s imperative that landowners carry out proper checks on prospective tenants and stay vigilant for suspected criminal activity, as ultimately the burden and cost of clearing waste falls on the owner.”
